Fulbright – Nehru Scholar Criminal Justice, Legal Studies and Social Work Missouri Western State University Access to justice has been a career-long pursuit for Professor Tushaus, who for 14 years worked as attorney and managing attorney for Legal Aid of Western Missouri where he handled government benefits, health care, consumer problems, domestic violence, disability issues and farming cases. Awards for his advocacy include a 1995 Missouri Health Law Advocacy Award for state-wide work toward consumer protections. Dr. Tushaus became a professor in 1999 and chairperson of the Department of Criminal Justice, Legal Studies and Social Work in 2005 at Missouri Western State University. He developed service learning approaches to teaching legal research, legal drafting and election law. He has formed and worked with international research teams to study access to justice issues in Asia. He received the Missouri Governors Award for Excellence in Education in 2011 and the Distinguished Professor Award in 2009. Publications include articles on service learning and access to justice topics. He received the Emerald Literati Network Award for Excellence in 2011 for an article co-authored with several others, “An examination of contextual and police training influencing police use of force.” Professor Tushaus earned a J.D. and M.A. in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Iowa and a B.A. from the University of Missouri, Columbia.
